Epsom Handicap

History

This is a Group 1 middle distance race, raced over 1600 metres at open handicap conditions, run at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

The Epsom Handicap is the major mile race over the Sydney Spring Carnival, and is one of three Group 1 races held on Epsom Handicap day. In terms of prestige, the Epsom ranks only second to its autumn counterpart: the Doncaster Mile.

The race always attracts a quality field of milers and middle distance specialists, with the winner going onto other feature 1600 metre/mile events down in Melbourne.

The Epsom Handicap was first competed for in 1863, though it has only been deferred once during that time: 2007, when an outbreak of equine influenza prevented the race from taking place.

Venue

Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the Royal Randwick course is one of four premier venues for horse racing in the city.

Tips

This race starts from the 1600 metre chute. It joins onto the back straight, with a run of 600 metres to the first turn. There’s no real advantage to inside runners here.

The last 30 years have only seen 5 favourites come first, 4 come second and 3 come third. (12 out of 30). So it appears it’s not really a race for favourites.

This Years Runners

The race is due to be run Saturday October 4th, 2014. Luxbet’s team of experts will assess the line-up, betting and odds closer to the time.
