Metropolitan Handicap

History

This is a Group 1 middle distance race, raced over 2400 metres at open handicap conditions, run at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

The Metropolitan Handicap is the major middle distance race over the Sydney Spring Carnival, and is one of three Group 1 races held on Epsom Handicap day.

The race has often been seen as good lead-up to the Caulfield Cup, raced over the same distance, and which follows a fortnight later down in Melbourne.

Like the Epsom Handicap, the Metropolitan was also first competed for in 1863, it too only once being deferred due to the 2007 equine influenza outbreak.

Some very handy horses such as Beau Vite, Dalray, Redcraze and Tails (twice) have won this prestigious race.

Venue

Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, the Royal Randwick course is one of four premier venues for horse racing in the city.

Tips

This race starts in the middle of the home straight, with a 200 metre run until the first turn. It’s a sweeping turn which takes about another 800 metres before they head into the back straight where things even out. Inside barriers are advantageous up to this point.

The last 30 years have only seen 6 favourites come first, 5 come second and 2 come third. (13 out of 30).

This Years Runners

The race is due to be run Saturday October 3rd, 2015. Luxbet’s team of experts will assess the line-up, betting and odds closer to the time.
